Lectionary to Lustration

Lectionary-A book listing selections of SACRED texts to be read during DIVINE service.

Laity-A congregation of people ministered to by a church or the clergy. A non-professional group.

Lamb of God-JESUS CHRIST.

Lama-A priest of Tibetan BUDDHISM or LAMAISIM.

Lamaism (Buddhism) -A form of Mahayana BUDDHISM, with rituals and hierarchy under the DALAI LAMA, and is practiced in Nepal, Tibet and Mongolia.

Last Judgment-A CHRISTIAN theme that reminds us that CHRIST will return to judge us. Seen as the final battle of good vs. evil. Also known as ARMAGEDDON. See SECOND COMING.

Latitudinarian-A person that holds a tolerant, liberal view of religious beliefs.

Laying on of Hands-A RELIGIOUS ceremony in which an ordained person places his or her hands on the head of a person being confirmed or is receiving HOLY confirmation. This type of procedure is also used in FAITH HEALING procedures.

Lao Tzu (Around 600 B.C.) -A Chinese contemporary of CONFUCIUS, who composed the classic text the Tao Te Ching, and the resultant TAOISM.

Leap-Sudden realization or attainment of ENLIGHTENMENT.

Left-Brain-Usually referred to the lobe of the brain that has to do with verbal, rational, logical and analytic assessments. Compare to RIGHT-BRAIN.

Lexicon-A specialized list of terms or definitions of a specialized or narrow field of interest.

Liberation-A common term in Eastern spirituality indicating purging of ATTACHMENT. It indicates freedom from the illusions regarding the nature of existence, suffering, the frustration of not understanding the nature of your own mind, and being stuck in repetitive behaviors of all kinds. The final release from SAMSARA.

Libertinism (A variant of liberty)-The indulgence or allowance of flesh as a religious experience.

Life Force-A vital, life-sustaining energy present in all living organisms. It is a common theme in all ancient religions, and is also known as PRANA, CHI, or MANA.

Life-Path-A set of experiences that are developed when the lessons gained on one's SPIRITUAL PATH, are aimed at one's practical, everyday life.

Light-A source of positive ILLUMINATION or energy, usually believed to be from the angels or from the presence of an especially DIVINE person. To be able to see the idea or ideas that you have been searching for, like an AWAKENING and to finally "see the light."

Light-Being-A SPIRIT GUIDE or other SUPERNATURAL source of guidance.

Light Work-A term used that refers to the use of light in MEDITATION or healing.

Listening-The ability to actively concentrate on deep listening. Not just speed-listening, but true comprehensive listening with complete attention. This would include not just other people, but the mother earth, animals, ourselves, nature's rhythms, etc., as this is the cornerstone of SPIRITUAL development and true ENLIGHTENMENT.

Litany-Prayer in the form of call and reply, usually between a minister and the CONGREGATION.

Literalism-The literal interpretation of the BIBLE.

Liturgies-Rites of RELIGIOUS reverence.

Lot-One's worldly outcome or fortune; that which is the result of one's way of life. Compare with FATE.
